VA Loans for Active Duty, Reserves, and National Guard
How eligibility and the process differ depending on your service status.
VA loan eligibility extends well beyond separated veterans. Active-duty service members, and members of the Reserves and National Guard, are frequently eligible too — the exact requirements just depend on your specific service path.
Active duty
- Generally eligible after a minimum continuous period of active-duty service
- A Statement of Service from your commanding officer can sometimes substitute for a full COE while still serving
- PCS orders can factor into timing and occupancy planning
Reserves and National Guard
- Generally eligible after six years of service, or after being called to active duty for a qualifying period
- Eligibility rules here are a common source of confusion — it's worth confirming your exact status rather than assuming either way
General guidelines
- Your COE will reflect your specific service path once pulled
- Entitlement and funding fee rules apply the same way regardless of active duty, Reserve, or Guard status, once eligibility is established
