VA Loans for Surviving Spouses
Eligibility rules for spouses of service members who died in service or from a service-connected disability.
Certain surviving spouses of veterans are eligible for VA loan benefits in their own right — it's not limited to the service member alone. This is a meaningful benefit that goes underused simply because many surviving spouses don't realize they qualify.
Generally eligible if you're a surviving spouse and...
- Your spouse died in the line of duty, or
- Your spouse died from a service-connected disability, and you haven't remarried (with some exceptions depending on age at remarriage)
What you'll need
- Your own Certificate of Eligibility, applied for with documentation such as the DD Form 1300 or a death certificate
- The same general underwriting (credit, income, debt-to-income) as any other VA loan applicant
- Surviving spouses are also generally exempt from the VA funding fee
